Lithium-Ion Battery Recycling in the Circular Economy
The number of wasted lithium-ion batteries is rising along with the use of these batteries in modern electronics including mobile devices, electric vehicles, and grid-scale electronic storage. Despite the fact that these batteries are valuable and recyclable, barely 5% of them are recycled because of many technical, financial, and other issues. Furthermore, a tenfold increase over current consumption is predicted for li-ion battery waste in the long run.
Economics and Challenges of Li-Ion Battery Recycling from End-of-Life Vehicles
Whereas rising demand for Li-ion batteries is depleting lithium, cobalt, and other metals at an exponential rate, it has created a slew of new problems:
  •  Batteries nearing the end of their useful life have a 35% CAGR.
  •  Already, 500K Tons of Li-Ion batteries have reached the end of their useful life.
  •  The expected growth in Li-Ion battery production is 5X by 2030, amounting to over 7 million tonnes of Li-Ion batteries.
  •  By 2030, 3 million tonnes of Li-Ion batteries are predicted to be obsolete.
  •  500-700k tonnes of manufacturing waste in 2030, up from 50K tonnes now.
  •  1 tonne of lithium requires 500k gallons of water to mine.
